OAT Examination Overview
The OAT Program does not endorse any test preparation courses and has no data on the content or efficacy of test preparation courses designed to prepare examinees to take the OAT. The OAT Program urges individuals considering participating in test preparation courses to review carefully the course materials to ensure that they reflect the current content of the OAT.
While all optometry schools require examinees to participate in the OAT Program, test results are only one factor considered in evaluating the admission potential of an examinee.
A sample test is available to download below. It contains samples of the four tests used in the Optometry Admission Testing Program. The sample test is made available to enable the examinee to become familiar with the types of material included in the test as well as with the general coverage and format of the various parts of the test battery.
Helpful Information
Remember that when you test, the name on your IDs must match exactly with the name on your application. If the name on your application and your IDs do not match exactly, you will be denied admission to testing and, as a result, forfeit your scheduled testing appointment and your application fee. You will be required to submit a new application.
Examinees that experience concerns about scheduling issues, testing conditions, or any unresolved problem should inform the Test Administrator before leaving the test center and record this information in the appropriate section of the post-test survey. For issues requiring further action, examinees must contact the Optometry Admission Testing Program at: oatexam@ada.org within five business days of the testing appointment.
At the completion of your testing appointment, you will receive an unofficial score report at the Prometric Testing Center. Your test responses are audited for accuracy before official scores are reported to the optometry schools requested on your OAT application. Please retain the unofficial report given to you at the Prometric Test Center.
The application fee includes reporting official scores to five optometry schools if requested on your application.
Designate where to send an additional score report on the electronic form below. You can send additional reports to: optometry schools, other institutions, or send one to yourself.
